PASSAGE OF TIME
The passage of time is the foundation of her story so it’s crucial that it’s conveyed immediately and telegraphically. The character ages: wardrobe and styling are the boldest indicators of this, but subtly executed. The art direction and overall color schemes shift with the times. Having evolving pieces of technology, like a phone, will also effortlessly indicate another the passage of time.
Our opening scene takes place in an early morning light, and the rest of the film follows this trajectory over the course of a day. We can also utilize things like weather cues and the go-between of intimate and public scenes to make each frame feel distinct.
One possibility is to base our luts on film stock that was available during those particular times, but I think that tempering the grain structure and color contrast for each punctuating moment could be sufficient. We can also change formats and aspect ratios. For instance, in the mid 80’s we could shoot with a camcorder in a 4:3 aspect. The change in look immediately immerses us in the era.
