We need to remember we’re not just casting faces; we’re casting diverse personalities… globally. As we’re getting a glimpse at ‘X‘ invention labs we should also feel like we’re going around the world with people that come from all walks of life and clue us into something past the brand. These engineers shouldn’t look like they all went to the same WASPY College, live in loveless suburban marriages and have teenage kids who don’t think they “get it.” Let’s show dimension by staying away from convention to celebrate each other’s uniqueness just as much as the things we make when we put our heads together.
How do we think engineers look? Like nerdy, quirky, sun-deprived and socially awkward waifs? We’ll maybe a few can be, but not everyone. This cast of engineers should be current to reflect parts of the modern mantras, styles and trends around the world. Where scientists now look like mustached mixologists, heavy set bikers, teenage DJ’s, sushi chefs, goths, cowboys, pubescent prodigies, or polyester’d men with Velcro shoes. Where an engineer can be tattooed tribally like a Thai monk and a product designer come off like a roadie for Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Overall we just want people who are into their own styles and not one that’s been assigned. Not excluding anyone, I want to see and define top tech Engineers to look like our friends and act like them too. These engineers are also mothers, fathers, dudes we see at grocery stores and girls who find their truest selves in a good night out dancing, not just in hi-tech labs
