We’ve got two characters: the Captain and the Woman. As we already know our Captain, the casting of the woman is key. She should be a natural beauty with seductive qualities – more voluptuous than a fashion model, but equally as photogenic from every angle. There should be a ‘devil may care’ spark to her, a woman who is aware of her sensuality in the healthiest sense. A conspiratorial chemistry must radiate between her and the Captain. She’s not a damsel in distress or a hostage. We sense confidence in her eyes. She’s intrigued by the potential risk of disappearing from the light. A filmmaker sees humor and humanity in everything, a major reason the background characters should not look like actors – more like extras picked up off the street who perform perfectly in synch with the fluid camera work.
