I’m gravitating towards long steady cam shots for this. First person or even POV allows us to slip inside our hero. Striding in her sandals, we see as she sees, experience life as she does, and understand her decisions.
We occasionally pan to various distractions that line the path. But it’s not just hardship we see. There are glimpses of triumph- a billboard on the street or a framed picture in a corridor depicting an African American hero. I think there are subtle ways to integrate past victories into the spot. For example, as our hero walks, others casually fall into step next to him, for a moment conjuring up memories of Selma. They join and walk with him a minute, supporting him on his way before continuing on their own paths, allowing our hero to chart his own destiny.
Through it all is a current of abstraction. We could be anyone, anywhere. Even the unlikeliest of candidates can undertake this pilgrimage and her story is so compelling, we leap at the chance to join her.
